Ancora's terrace overhangs the Adriatic, giving us picturesque views of lit up boats returning to dock and jumping fish outlined by underwater flood lights. Once the head waiter moved the grumpy manager away, service was snappy and friendly.

Our trio split a bottle of the Cabernet made with local Teran grapes, a full-bodied and delicious red. The spaghetti bolognese was the equal of Venice's standard, thick and meaty with fresh, homemade pasta. The seafood in my risotto with squid sauce was overpowered by the sauce, although the risotto itself was perfectly done. The crustacean marinara was well-sprinkled with seafood and the spaghetti was timely cooked. I should mention that the fresh grated Parmesan here and elsewhere in town is cut very fine and tastes much sharper than the Parmesan we grind at table at home.

Our insalata mista was large enough to share and the deep flavor of the local tomatoes again made me wonder why Florida's fruit of the same name is so widely consumed. Prices were relatively high (60-90 kuna for main dishes, 150 for the local Cabernet Sauvignon), but worth it for the real estate and the chef.
